Choosing Pattterns for Winter Wardrobe

Picking out the fabrics for my winter wardrobe was the first step.  Now, comes the patterns!  There are so many gorgeous options out there, but I think that I've narrowed it down.

For the black skirt and metallic vest, I'm going to use the Khaliah Ali wardrobe pattern Simplicity 2344.  I like the front walking slit for the skirt, and the princess lines of the vest.  I also like that this is one of the patterns with the multiple cup sizes, so I don't have to worry about doing a full bust adjustment on my own.

For the paisley silk blouse, I'm going to use the brand new McCalls pattern 6512.  I like several things about this pattern- the interesting yoke that becomes the sleeve, the low slung tie, and the curved hem.

For the black and white honeycomb stretch wool, I'm going to try the Project Runway dress pattern Simplicity 2337.   I'm not sure which version to make yet.  I'll probably make View A with the center pleats in hope that it will provide a little tummy camouflage.

I want to make the Ann Klein pants Vogue 1200 out of both the gold wool and the ivory wool.  If I can get the fit right, I  think that this will be a classic style that won't go out of fashion. These are both super nice pieces of fabric, so I'm going to definitely need to sew up a sample in a cheaper fabric before I cut into them.

For the animal print silk charmeuse, I'm going to try  the simple top in McCall's 6519.  This is such a busy print, that any seaming would get totally lost, so I might as well go as basic as possible.  I like the other pieces in this pattern as well, so will hopefully try some of the other views out when I get this initial set of fabrics completed.

And last, but not least, is the jacket for the black and cream acrylic boucle.   I'm going to go for the middle length version of Butterick 5685.  I like that this one also has the princess lines and the multiple cup sizes.  Plus pockets!  You'd be surprised how many otherwise good jacket patterns don't have pockets.

So now off to begin!  30 days to go!  Anyone else participating in the Fabric Stash Contest?  Join me if you can.  We'll all be winners just by completing projects!

  1. I love them all! You have fantastic taste:) I have the PR Simplicity 2337 though I've yet to make it. I was torn between that and a fairly similar pattern (forgot which one atm) for a Christmas party dress. I went with the other since it was a little more formal and I have to say I LOVE the side pleats! After having 2 10+lbs babies in the past 3 years I wanted some tummy camouflage. The pleating worked fantastic! I felt and looked like my old self :) Happy sewing!

What to Wear in Madagascar

To be honest, I have no idea what to wear in Madagascar, and this title may need to be changed to "what NOT to wear in Madagascar" in a few months.  We will have to wait and see.  My 22 year old daughter, Alyssa, left for the Peace Corps this week, and she will be stationed in Madagascar for the next 2 years and 3 months.  Yes, you read that right- TWO YEARS and three months!!! We are very proud of her for wanting to help make the world a better place, and for being fearless in doing so, but it will be a looooong time for Mama and Papa back home. Not knowing anything about Madagascar, the first step in figuring out what to pack was to figure out the weather and the cultural norms.  Madagascar is a very large island off the southeastern coast of Africa.  It's very, very unique in it's ecosystem, and has many species that are not found anywhere else in the world- most famously lemurs. Right now, it is experiencing it's rainy season, as you can see by the

Vogue 9305 Asymmetrical Tunics

It's April and we're expecting snow tonight.  Have we switched hemispheres?  Nevertheless, I am sewing with visions of warm sunny days.  And for those warm sunny days to come, I imagine sitting in the shade with a light breeze flowing through the air, enjoying a light beverage with friends.  Just close your eyes and you can imagine too.  What would you be wearing?  Well,  I love a dramatic asymmetrical tunic made of the softest linen.  As luck would have it, I found just the fabric in the "As Is" section in Fabric Mart's sales category.  With just some irregular dye marks on the selvage, it was marked down, but still completely usable.  It started out as a solid color, but I did an ombre dip dye process to get this look- more on that later! For my pattern, I chose Vogue 9305 , a tunic with a shaped hemline, and two styles of pants (I didn't make the pants).   This pattern must be the biggest bang for your time possible.  The tunic went tog

Grey Cashmere Coat Simplicity 3672

For the past few months, Fabric Mart has had the most gorgeous array of Michael Kors Wool Blend Coatings that I have ever seen!  During COVID stay at home time, I've been letting my gray grow out, and I thought that even though some of the delicious sounding shades like apricot and apple green would be beautiful, the heathered gray shade would be the most flattering to my gray hair and the most versatile for a winter coat.  And it was one of the coatings that listed Cashmere as one of the fiber components, so I was curious as to how that would feel.
